DP World to Build 2 UAE Container Terminals to Skirt Hormuz
The project will add 2.5 million containers of annual capacity and link the new terminals to Jebel Ali through an inland logistics network.
- On Wednesday, DP World, the global ports operator, announced a 50-year concession with Fujairah Ports Authority to develop two new terminals on the UAE's east coast, increasing container capacity by roughly 13%.
- Vessel crossings via the Strait of Hormuz dropped further on Tuesday as Tehran's near-total blockade continued, prompting the UAE—which built its economy around trade and logistics—to accelerate supply chain diversification.
- Combined annual capacity of the Al Rugaylat container and multi-purpose terminal and Dibba General Cargo terminal will reach 2.5 million 20-foot containers, 190,000 autos and 5.3 million tons of cargo; development will boost DP World's UAE capacity from 19.4 million to almost 22 million TEUs.
- Connected via inland logistics network to Jebel Ali and Jafza, the terminals will support long-term growth, DP World CEO Yuvraj Narayan said, while Chairman Essa Kazim noted the project "reinforces the country's strategic role in global trade."
- Experts say tens of billions of dollars will be spent in coming years on bypass projects as the Middle East enters a pipeline-building boom; the Strait of Hormuz carries roughly a quarter of global seaborne crude oil.
