Dozens Of Hawaiʻi’s Mentally Ill Inmates To Move to Waiawa Prison
Officials plan to convert a Waiawa dormitory for about 40 inmates with mental illness, while adding 24-hour medical staffing and a psychiatrist.
The Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation plans to move about 40 minimum-security inmates with mental health issues from Hlawa prison to Waiawa Correctional Facility in Central Oahu, addressing a class action settlement.
Experts identified 63 male inmates with mental health needs that the current prison cannot meet, prompting officials to prioritize those within 60 months of release for a more therapeutic setting.
Tommy Johnson, director of the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, said the agency is finalizing plans for 24-hour medical staffing and psychiatric support before any inmates transfer.
Rep. Trish La Chica questioned whether staff can meet these special needs, while T.J. Cuaresma of the Wahiaw-Whitmore Village Neighborhood Board stressed the critical need for qualified healthcare professionals.
Martha Torney, a longtime state corrections administrator, praised the plan to move inmates to minimum-security settings as the Department continues seeking funding to upgrade mental health services.
