Dozens killed in blast at building storing explosives in Myanmar, rescuers say
- A massive explosion at an explosives storage building in northeastern Myanmar killed more than 45 people and injured dozens of others on Sunday, according to rescue workers and local media reports.
- The blast occurred around noon in the village of Kaungtup, located in Namhkam township, a border region roughly 3 kilometers south of China.
- At least 46 bodies—including six children—were recovered from the scene by Sunday evening, while at least 74 injured individuals were transported to a nearby township hospital for urgent medical care.
- The explosion caused widespread destruction in the surrounding community, completely flattening or severely damaging more than 100 residential homes and leaving the area buried in heavy debris.
- The Ta'ang National Liberation Army , an ethnic armed group that controls the region, confirmed it was storing gelignite at the site for mining and stone quarrying operations, noting that an official investigation into what triggered the highly unstable commercial explosive is currently underway.
