Downtown Kentucky Bar District Shooting Leaves 1 Dead, 4 Injured
Police said five people were shot during a community event, and no suspect information has been released as investigators continue the case.
On Saturday evening, a mass shooting at Charles Young Park in downtown Lexington killed one person and injured four, including a four-year-old and 14-year-old, when Lexington Police Department responded to the 200 block of Midland Avenue around 6:45 p.m.
Earlier Saturday, First District Council Member Tyler Morton had invited the public to the "East End Day" event at the park, which was interrupted by the shooting. The city subsequently enacted its Emergency Mobilization Plan.
Lexington Police Chief Lawrence Weathers confirmed the shooting occurred at Charles Young Park and stated there is no lingering threat to the public, urging anyone with information to contact the department at 258-3600.
Devine Carama, director of ONE Lexington, witnessed the shooting eight inches away and plans to organize support resources early next week for those affected. He praised community members attempting to assist victims as first responders arrived.
Gov. Andy Beshear addressed the shooting while speaking at the Kentucky Democratic Party's "Moving Forward Together" event as Lexington police continue investigating. Police have not yet released details regarding a suspect.
