Downstairs Open, yet Dry: How Europe's Unique Diving Bell Ship Works

The Wasser- und Schifffahrtsamt Duisburg-Rhein offers itself with the diving bell ship "Carl Straat" a special ship at least unique in Europe. Its crew can remove dangerous obstacles up to 10 m underwater, check weirs and locks, anchor buoys or conduct ground investigations. To this end, it uses a steel bell open downwards, from which the river water is blocked by overpressure.
