Douglas County teacher facing sexual assault charges
Investigators say Maris Nichols had intercourse with the same student twice, and school leaders said the conduct violated professional standards.
On Friday, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office arrested Maris Nichols, a 25-year-old biology teacher at Alexander High School, and charged her with two counts of sexual assault by a person with supervisory or disciplinary authority.
Authorities alerted parents about the situation on Thursday after the Douglas County School System launched an immediate investigation upon learning of the alleged misconduct; the district stated it is "deeply troubled" by the allegations.
Arrest warrants allege Nichols had sexual intercourse with a student on two occasions: April 23 in an Alexander High School closet and May 2 inside a Hummer parked in a residential driveway.
During a video court appearance on Friday, a judge set bond at $40,000 for Nichols, who remains booked in the Douglas County Jail pending further proceedings.
The Douglas County School System continues to cooperate fully with law enforcement, though officials have not confirmed whether Nichols remains employed or will face disciplinary action as the investigation continues.
