Premiers gathered to meet with PM call for new pipelines built with Ontario steel
ONTARIO, CANADA, JUL 22 – The MOU aims to strengthen energy security and create thousands of jobs by using Ontario steel for pipelines and rail infrastructure connecting western resources to Ontario refineries and ports.
- On Monday, Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe, Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith signed the MOU, committing to infrastructure projects and using Ontario steel in Ontario's cottage country.
- Doug Ford warned that endless decades of regulations and bureaucracy are the biggest impediment, as the MOU commits provinces to push for a more competitive federal regulatory environment and an updated review process based on the `One Project, One Process` principle.
- Under the MOU, pipelines will be built using Ontario steel to feed southern Ontario refineries, with new rail lines from Ontario's Ring of Fire to Western Canada.
- In direct outcomes, the deal will strengthen energy security and support thousands of jobs, as provinces reaffirmed their commitment to consult Indigenous communities and foster equity partnerships.
- As U.S. trade pressures mount, premiers warned of future risks from potential 35% U.S. tariffs on Aug. 1 if federal partnership in the CUSMA review is not secured.
