Construction of New Ontario Science Centre Begins
The $1-billion project will feature a 400,000-square-foot facility, renovated pods and an upgraded Cinesphere, officials said.
On Thursday, Ontario Premier Doug Ford officially broke ground on the new Ontario Science Centre at Ontario Place, launching construction of a 400,000-square-foot facility slated to open in 2029.
The relocation decision followed the abrupt June 2024 closure of the original Ontario Science Centre on Don Mills Road after an engineering report warned of roof collapse risks, though critics have questioned this reasoning.
At least 120,000 square feet will be dedicated to exhibits with renovated pods and an upgraded Cinesphere; Tourism Minister Stan Cho said the new facility will be roughly 100,000 square feet smaller but much more efficient.
The full Ontario Place redevelopment is projected to create 5,700 jobs and add $420 million to Ontario's GDP during construction, while CEO Paul Kortenaar pledged the centre will continue sparking curiosity for visitors.
Transit connections via the Ontario Line's Exhibition Station and links to GO Transit and Billy Bishop Airport will establish the waterfront as an accessible destination; Premier Ford called it one of Canada's landmark attractions projected to welcome six million annual visitors.
