Tragic Bus Accident on Lucknow-Agra Expressway Claims Six Lives
Police said the driver allegedly dozed off, causing the bus to overturn and eject passengers through the windows.
Early Tuesday, a double-decker AC bus overturned on the Lucknow-Agra Expressway in Unnao district after striking the divider, killing six people including a police sub-inspector and injuring 21 others.
Eyewitnesses reported the bus was traveling at high speed before suddenly colliding with the divider; preliminary investigations suggest the driver may have dozed off at the wheel.
Among the six deceased were Sub-Inspector Ramchandra and prisoner Chhatrapal, who had been returning from Siwan when the accident occurred at kilometre 262 of the expressway in the Auras police station area.
Police and rescue teams immediately transported the injured to nearby hospitals, with critically injured passengers referred to Lucknow's Trauma Centre and others treated at district hospitals.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath called the loss of lives "extremely heartbreaking and soul-wrenching" and instructed authorities to provide adequate compensation to victims and their families.
