DoorDash Launches in-House Drone Delivery Program After FAA Certification
DoorDash Air will start with limited pilot programs as the company builds its own aircraft and software to coordinate drones, bots and drivers.
- On Wednesday, DoorDash announced it received Part 135 air carrier certification from the Federal Aviation Administration, enabling the company to launch an in-house drone delivery program called DoorDash Air.
- DoorDash aims to reduce delays for orders traveling 3 to 5 miles, as finding human Dashers for midrange trips takes about 25% longer than shorter deliveries.
- Developed within DoorDash Labs, the Autonomous Delivery Platform coordinates between human drivers, sidewalk bots, and drones while the company maintains existing partnerships with Wing and Flytrex.
- DoorDash Air is expected to begin commercial deliveries in fall 2026, though the company stated this is "only the beginning" and drones will not deliver orders immediately.
- While DoorDash is the eighth U.S. operator to secure this certification, the company still requires FAA approval for Beyond Visual Line of Sight technology to fly drones autonomously over longer distances.
