'Doomsday Clock' moves closer than ever to midnight, a year into Trump's term
- On Jan. 27, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists moved the Doomsday Clock forward by four seconds, announcing the change at a 3pm Washington, D.C. event.
- Citing multiple drivers, the Bulletin said growing nuclear threats, climate change, artificial intelligence , biological risks, disinformation, and a `failure of leadership` among Russia, China and the United States prompted the shift.
- Experts determined the clock's setting in consultation with a sponsor board, noting that for the first time in over half a century, nothing prevents a runaway nuclear arms race, while the board warned the New START treaty expires next week.
- The shift leaves the clock at its closest-ever reading, and the Bulletin warned hard-won global understandings are collapsing, accelerating existential threats while urging swift leadership and cooperation.
- The Bulletin recommended policy steps including renewable energy and multilateral dialogue among the U.S., China and Russia to reduce AI and nuclear risks.

The Doomsday Clock Ticks Closer to Midnight. Does Anyone Care?
The Doomsday Clock, a symbol of how close humanity is to destroying itself, has moved from 89 seconds to 85 seconds, four seconds closer to “doomsday.” That is the closest the Clock has ever been to midnight. That’s when, in the metaphor proposed by the keepers of the Clock, the world ends. The Doomsday Clock is now set to just 85 seconds before midnight—the closest in history. Scientists have cited aggression by Russia, China, and the United States, the Ukraine-Middle East war, the breakdown of nuclear treaties, the threat of AI, disinformation, and climate change as the main causes. A lack of global leadership is increasing the threat. The risk of nuclear war is high.
The symbolic doomsday clock is supposed to show how close we are to a global catastrophe: 85 seconds – new record.
