'Don't take us to a hospital': Iran protesters treated in secret to avoid arrest
At least six medical professionals have been arrested and accused of moharebeh for treating protesters amid a crackdown that has led to over 6,300 deaths, rights groups say.
- Last week Iran Human Rights said sources reported the arrest of at least five doctors and a volunteer first responder, including Qazvin surgeon Dr Alireza Golchini, who was reportedly beaten at home.
- Security forces are present in hospitals such as Imam Khomeini Hospital and monitor patients' records, pressuring doctors and nurses working in emergency departments to clear wards and avoid noting gunshot wounds.
- Hospitals reported that Dr Qasem Fakhrai of Farabi Eye Hospital treated 700 severe eye injury patients by 10 January, while Hossein Shokri said around 13,000 operations occurred during unrest.
- Many injured people are avoiding hospitals and are instead treated secretly at private homes by doctors, nurses and volunteer medics, while some seek remote help from Dr Panteha Rezaeian, cardiovascular specialist .
- This month an internet blackout and reporting ban have hindered verification, while human rights monitors say authorities sought to conceal casualties, complicating independent confirmation.
