Woman Jailed for Breaching Anonymity of Donaldson Victims
Donna Toman admitted posting information on social media that could identify a victim, and the court said all sex offence victims have lifelong anonymity.
On Monday, a Northern Ireland court sentenced 55-year-old Donna Toman to three months in jail for breaching the lifetime anonymity of victims of former DUP leader Jeffrey Donaldson.
Toman pleaded guilty to posting material on social media on June 26 that allowed the public to identify a victim of Donaldson, who was convicted of 18 counts of sex abuse.
Her legal representative called the post "a lapse in judgment," noting Toman edited the content within 90 minutes and expressed "a strong amount of disgust" toward Donaldson's crimes.
District Judge Peter Magill ruled "there is only one proper course, a sentence of immediate custody," stating victims of sexual offending must be protected to encourage future reporting.
Public Prosecution Service Assistant Director Catherine Kierans stated anonymity is "fundamental to the delivery of justice," warning that breaches risk undermining victim confidence in coming forward to police.
