Yorkshire Water Warning as Heatwave Sends Water Use Soaring
Yorkshire Water said Doncaster demand rose 24% in the last heatwave and warned regional use could top 1 billion litres a day.
On Friday, Yorkshire Water urged customers to reduce consumption as a heatwave sweeps the region, with Doncaster identified as experiencing the largest increase in water demand.
As temperatures reach 32°C this weekend, Andy Shaw, director of control, production and process at Yorkshire Water, predicts demand will peak at more than 1.5 billion litres per day.
Usage in Doncaster reached 105 million litres on Wednesday, while research reveals adults underestimate daily consumption, predicting 30 litres rather than the actual average of around 126 litres.
Strengthening the network with 250,000 smart meters and replacing 200km of water mains, Shaw expects no hosepipe restrictions this summer despite demand spikes, with reservoir levels at 75.7 per cent.
Professor Lizzie Kendon, strategic head of climate processes and projections at the Met Office, explained that climate change drives extreme weather patterns, creating urgent need for careful water management.
