European start-ups are developing aircraft for routes up to 500 km, with EASA saying they could serve a quarter of Europe’s flights.
- European start-ups are racing to build electric aircraft capable of traveling up to 500 kilometres, potentially serving a quarter of Europe's flight routes by the early 2030s, according to analysis by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency .
- Rapid advancements in electric motors and battery integration are overcoming past weight limitations that long made electric aviation impractical. These aircraft shield passengers from fossil fuel price shocks while significantly reducing air and noise pollution.
- German start-up Vaeridion plans to launch a nine-seat electric aircraft by 2030, while French start-up Aura Aero and Dutch aerospace company Elysian Aircraft are developing models ranging from 19 to 90 seats with certification targeted for late 2029.
- Vaeridion estimates operating costs could drop under €0.50 per passenger-kilometre, comparable to first-class rail fares. The European Commission proposed in July to broaden decarbonisation funding to support electric aircraft development alongside hydrogen-powered models.
- Electric flight must be powered by renewables to be truly zero carbon, warns Anna Hughes, director of campaign group Flight Free UK. She notes, "the reality of decarbonising travel will inevitably be travelling a lot less.
