DOJ mocks reporter for question about fake Nassar postcard: ‘You dope’
The DOJ defended releasing Epstein-related records as legally required while critics condemned missed deadlines, improper redactions, and unprofessional language on social media.
- The DOJ's official account replied sharply to a public query from reporter Jamie Dupree, saying, `Because the law requires us to release all documents related to Jeffrey Epstein in our possession so that's what we are doing, you dope.`
- Mandated by statute, the DOJ released records after lawmakers pressed for disclosure under the Epstein Files Transparency Act, which required release of information about individuals linked to Epstein by the Dec. 19 deadline.
- DOJ investigators said the postcard was unauthentic because of postmark and handwriting details, noting it was mailed three days after Epstein's death from Virginia despite his New York incarceration and referenced President Donald Trump.
- Rep. Thomas Massie amplified the exchange and questioned account control, Axios reported White House management of DOJ social media Wednesday, and political analyst Jeff Storbinsky called it "an outright embarrassment."
- Survivors and reporters flagged careless redactions as Danielle Bensky saw Prince Andrew's name redacted while Virginia Giuffre's remained, critics demanded release of 297 gigabytes, and attorney Dawn Neufeld warned of cover-up evidence.
