DOJ Investigating University of Washington over Antisemitism Concerns
The review follows allegations tied to an off-campus fundraiser and a student group that the university says caused more than $1 million in damage.
- On Monday, Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon announced the Justice Department opened a compliance review into the University of Washington's handling of antisemitism following planned events by a protest group the university says is unaffiliated with the school.
- Scrutiny centers on Students United for Palestinian Equality and Return , a group whose university registration was permanently revoked last May after occupying an engineering building and causing over $1 million in damages during a 2025 protest.
- Dhillon cited the group's planned fundraiser for the "Lebanese resistance" as a trigger for the review, while University spokesperson Victor Balta stated the institution "strongly and unequivocally opposes antisemitism" and will cooperate with the federal compliance review.
- The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression criticized the move, stating that holding the university responsible for private, off-campus expression would "stretch federal civil rights law far past its lawful bounds," citing Supreme Court precedent.
- Since taking office, the Trump administration has investigated 60 American universities over alleged antisemitism, an approach critics argue uses the issue as a pretense to punish institutions for promoting liberal worldviews and diversity initiatives.
