DOJ Plans to Deploy 1,000 Monitors to Watch Midterm Elections

Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon said the deployment will be the largest under a Republican president and will focus on ballot security and federal voting law compliance.

  • On Tuesday, the Justice Department is deploying federal election monitors to polling places in Florida and Wyoming as voters cast ballots in primary elections, ensuring transparency and compliance with federal law.
  • Enforcement of federal laws including the Voting Rights Act and the Help America Vote Act falls to the Civil Rights Division, which focuses on ballot security and regulatory compliance to protect ballot access.
  • Personnel from the Civil Rights Division are sending four attorneys to Miami-Dade County, Florida, and two attorneys to Laramie County, Wyoming. "Election monitoring is an ongoing priority for this office," said Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon.
  • Tuesday's assignments bring the department's total deployment this primary season to more than 75 monitors across five states, covering over 200 polling locations; by comparison, nine states received monitors during the 2022 midterm elections.
  • From now through the general election on Nov. 3, Civil Rights Division personnel will be available to receive questions and complaints from the public related to federal voting rights laws, ensuring elections remain free and accessible.
