DOJ Opens Civil Rights Review Into William & Mary Scholarships and Student Benefits
The federal review targets scholarships and student benefits that the Justice Department says may give race-based preferences, including full-ride awards and fellowships.
- On Monday, the Department of Justice announced a compliance review into the College of William & Mary, alleging scholarships violate Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by discriminating against students based on race, color, or national origin.
- Seven programs face scrutiny, including the Martha L. Muguira Fellowship and the Reaching Back Scholarship, which agency officials claim offer "top consideration" to applicants with an "interest in diverse people and perspectives."
- "Awarding scholarships or offering coveted opportunities to students based on the color of their skin is illegal and offends the guarantees of our color-blind Constitution," said Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon. The department aims to secure "compliance by informal voluntary means."
- Refusal to remedy alleged violations may result in termination of federal funding. The DOJ has targeted multiple universities nationwide, including a probe that led to the resignation of former University of Virginia President Jim Ryan last year.
- William & Mary has until September 8 to supply requested materials. The college stated it is "committed to nondiscriminatory learning environments" and complies with all state and federal laws, though it declined to comment on pending legal matters.
