Dogs Know if We’re Happy, Sad or Scared Just From Our Expressions, Study Suggests
Researchers found distinct brain activity in trained dogs as they viewed human faces, with happy expressions triggering reward-related regions.
On Monday, a University of Vienna study revealed that dogs' brains process human expressions, including happiness, sadness, anger, and fear, with distinct neural responses.
Researchers trained 12 dogs to remain still for MRI scans while viewing images of human faces, using machine learning to analyze their brain activity patterns.
Happy faces increased activity in the temporal cortex and caudate nucleus, regions associated with reward processing, while negative emotions did not trigger the same neural response in dogs.
"Finding that the caudate nucleus was involved in processing happy faces was a nice surprise," Senior study author Laura Cuaya told CNN, suggesting emotional significance for dogs.
Scientists now hope to adopt a "more dogcentric approach" to understand how dogs interpret human signals, though authors acknowledged the study's small sample size and breed-specific limitations.
