Dog found alive after 29 days under Venezuela earthquake rubble: reports

  • On Tuesday, rescuers pulled a poodle named Beyli alive from collapsed rubble in Catia, La Mar, Venezuela, 29 days after the June 24 earthquakes. The dog has become a symbol of hope amid the disaster.
  • The June 24 earthquakes, which included a 7.5-magnitude aftershock, devastated Venezuela and the Caribbean region. The disaster killed more than 5,500 people, while the injured exceeded 10,000 and more than 70,000 are reported missing.
  • According to Diario de Morelos, Beyli was found curled beside his 11-year-old owner's mother in the wreckage. The dog has since reunited with his owner at a temporary shelter.
  • Veterinarians report Beyli is severely dehydrated and suffering from eye ulcers caused by prolonged dust exposure. Despite these injuries, the dog is expected to recover with ongoing treatment.
  • While Beyli's survival is considered extraordinary from a physiological standpoint, emergency crews have largely shifted from rescue to recovery operations. Search efforts continue across the Caribbean region.
