'Reprehensible' Sports Star Pretended to Have Cancer to Steal £350,000

  • On Monday at the Criminal Courts of Justice in Dublin, DJ Carey, former Kilkenny hurler , was jailed for five-and-a-half years after pleading guilty in July to 10 counts of falsely claiming to have cancer.
  • According to the Criminal Courts of Justice, Carey pleaded guilty to 10 counts of dishonestly inducing others by claiming to have cancer, defrauding 22 people out of almost 400,000.
  • Records show Carey received 394,127 euro and 13,000 dollars, repaid 44,203 euro, and Denis O'Brien gave more than 125,000 euro, including accommodation and transport.
  • Judge Martin Nolan said Mr Carey exploited good-natured people, that it was hard to know his motives, and his good name will probably never recover amid public odium and ridicule.
  • As a context to the sentence, Carey is a five-time All-Ireland winner with nine All-Star awards whose sentencing was adjourned last week after the court was told he was in hospital, while his defence counsel described a stunning fall from grace.
