Moana Live-Action Movie With Dwayne Johnson Finally Sets Disney+ Release Date
The film opened to $43 million domestically and drew mixed-to-negative reviews before shifting to streaming.
- On October 21, 2026, the live-action Moana arrives on Disney Plus, starring Catherine Laga as the titular wayfinder and Dwayne Johnson reprising his role as the demigod Maui.
- Disney's live-action remake struggled in theaters, grossing around $323.6 million against a $250 million budget; Disney President Dana Walden attributed the underperformance to the proximity of the 2024 animated sequel, Moana 2.
- Critics gave the adaptation 33% on Tomatometer, a sharp contrast to the 96% original, while IGN's 6/10 review derided the film as a "frame-by-frame retelling" of the animated musical.
- To celebrate the premiere, Disney and Heal the Bay, a nonprofit environmental organization, will host a community beach cleanup at Santa Monica Beach on Saturday, October 17, 2026.
- Disney remains confident in the franchise, which includes three films and a themed area at EPCOT, despite the theatrical struggle; Johnson has mentioned development on Moana 3, though future live-action plans remain unconfirmed.
