Ohio High School Band Instruments Stolen While at Disney World
About 20% of the musical instruments were missing, but rentals, loans and thousands in donations kept the students performing.
- On Sunday, March 29, the Ashland High School Marching Band discovered their locked trailer was broken into at an International Drive hotel, with about 20% of instruments stolen hours before their Walt Disney World parade performance.
- About 160 students and staff traveled 22 hours from Ohio to Florida for this once-every-four-years trip. Many stolen instruments held deep personal value, with students having played them since fifth grade.
- Band leaders contacted Music & Arts, a national retailer partnering with Mike's Music Corner. Assistant band director Cameron Dietrich said it took two stores in the Orlando area to get instruments back in students' hands by Sunday night.
- With one saxophone still missing, staff secured a loaner from an Anna High School band parent around midnight. The band then marched down Main Street in Magic Kingdom, playing 'You've Got a Friend in Me' to cheers from crowds.
- The Orange County Sheriff's Office is investigating the theft, while the school district's insurance will ultimately cover replacement costs. Thousands have been donated through online fundraising to ensure students can continue making music without interruption.
