RAC: Busiest UK Airports Raise Kiss-and-Fly Fees
UNITED KINGDOM, JUL 16 – Eleven of the UK’s 20 busiest airports raised short-term drop-off fees by up to 33%, contrasting with most major European airports that maintain free kiss-and-fly zones, RAC said.
- More than half of UK airports raised or introduced drop-off fees this year, with Gatwick hiking to £7 and Heathrow to £6, according to RAC research.
- Record post-pandemic travel demand pushed airports to raise drop-off fees, as Karen Dee, chief executive of AirportsUK, said charges support congestion management and enable a wider range of flights.
- Charging fees of £7 at top UK airports highlights the steep costs motorists face, while nine of the EU's 10 busiest airports still offer free kiss-and-fly zones.
- Drivers are a captive audience, Rod Dennis said, adding that motorists who miss payments risk a very unwelcome parking charge notice.
- To accommodate growth, Heathrow and Gatwick are set to upgrade infrastructure and payment systems, while airports are shifting to barrierless drop-off payment systems online or by phone.
