During a visit to Cadillac in the Gironde region to assess the extent of the flooding, Monique Barbut, Minister for Ecological Transition, did not quell the controversy surrounding the financing of the protective dikes.
Monday, February 16th, continued to be marked by heavy rainfall, keeping the Gironde department under a red flood warning. Some local officials in the southern part of the department are denouncing the lack of maintenance of the dikes, structures which have sometimes given way to rising waters, as in Sainte-Croix-du-Mont.
Voices have been raised in the Gironde region since this weekend denouncing the state's withdrawal from dike maintenance. During a visit to Cadillac-sur-Garonne on Monday, the Minister for Ecological Transition, Monique Barbut, responded that elected officials could levy a tax but did not always do so.
