1 in 5 Children in 21 Countries Face Tech-Facilitated Sexual Abuse, UNICEF Says
UNICEF says 20 million children were exposed to online sexual abuse in a year, with most cases on social media platforms.
- An estimated 20 million children aged 12 to 17 experienced technology-facilitated sexual exploitation in a single year across 21 countries, according to the new UNICEF report, Through Children's Eyes: How Digital Technologies Enable Child Sexual Abuse.
- Nearly 60% of cases occurred on mainstream social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok and WhatsApp, while 14% took place in online games.
- The report found that 57% of cases involved someone the child already knew, including peers, romantic partners, friends and family members; more than 40% were never shared with anyone, while fewer than 1% were reported to authorities.
- Children who experienced technology-facilitated exploitation were four times more likely to report suicidal thoughts or behaviours and self-harm, with the risk more than eight times higher in Mexico and North Macedonia.
- UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell stated, "We cannot look away," urging governments and technology companies to strengthen privacy protections and restrict unsolicited contact from adults.
