Did Any Local Towns Make the Town of Culture Shortlist - Which Was Announced Today?
The UK Government announced a 15-town shortlist for the inaugural UK Town of Culture 2028 competition on Thursday, selecting candidates from nearly 400 applicants to compete for a £3 million grant.
Launched by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, the competition aims to restore pride in local areas and foster economic growth through cultural investment, mirroring the successful UK City of Culture scheme.
Each of the 15 shortlisted towns will receive £60,000 to develop detailed bids, which an independent panel chaired by Sir Phil Redmond will assess; Redmond described the response as "overwhelming."
The overall winner will receive a £3 million grant to host a year-long cultural programme in 2028, while two runners-up will each secure £250,000 to deliver parts of their proposals.
Previous City of Culture winners have attracted more than £1 billion in additional investment and welcomed an estimated 2 million visitors, demonstrating the potential long-term legacy for successful shortlisted towns.
