DHS Fast-Tracks 5-Year-Old Liam Ramos and His Father for Deportation
DHS is pursuing deportation of 5-year-old Liam and his father despite a pending asylum case and a recent court continuance, with lawyers calling the move possibly retaliatory.
- DHS on Feb 6 moved in immigration court to remove Liam Conejo Ramos, a five-year-old Ecuadorean boy detained in Minnesota, and filed to end his family’s asylum claims and expedite deportation.
- After being flown over 1,000 miles to Dilley, Texas, the family was released on Jan 31 following a judge’s order, returning to Minneapolis.
- A viral photo showed the boy in a blue bunny hat and Spider-Man backpack as he was surrounded by ICE agents, and his father reported Liam suffers trauma, fever, and cough since detention.
- At a Friday hearing, a judge granted a continuance, while family attorney Danielle Molliver warned deportation could occur in a matter of weeks, and DHS said these are regular removal proceedings.
- Since October, federal lawyers have increasingly asked judges to dismiss asylum cases without hearings, prompting judicial criticism and protests involving U.S. Representative Joaquin Castro, D-Texas.
