Hong Kong Issues Highest Weather Warning, as Rains Shut Schools, Courts and Hospital Wards
HONG KONG, AUG 5 – The warning follows over 300mm of rain since midnight, causing flooding that disrupted schools, courts, and hospital emergency services across multiple districts, officials said.
- On Aug 5, at 5.50am the Hong Kong Observatory issued and said it will remain in force until at least 11am after heavy rainfall exceeded 100mm in some areas.
- Amid heavy showers, the Hong Kong Observatory issued a black rainstorm signal for a second time in six hours on Tuesday, after issuing the previous warning at 11.45pm on Monday.
- Statistics from the weather authority show up to 60-90mm of rain per hour and 9,837 lightning strokes between 6am and 6:59am.
- The Hong Kong hospital authority said general outpatient clinics and geriatric and psychiatric day hospitals will close, and ambulances bound for Queen Mary Hospital are diverted to Ruttonjee Hospital until 11am.
- Meanwhile, Shenzhen issued its own red alert at 4am on Aug 5, the first since 2018, as Tuesday’s black rainstorm warning became the fourth in just over a week, a record since records begin in 1998.
