Judge Orders Turbine Manufacturer to Stick with Massachusetts Offshore Wind Farm Project
The judge said replacing the contractor would be fanciful as Vineyard Wind seeks to keep installation moving on the 62-turbine project.
- On Friday, Suffolk County Superior Court Judge Peter Krupp granted a preliminary injunction blocking GE Vernova from terminating maintenance contracts for the offshore wind farm Vineyard Wind.
- The legal dispute arose after GE Renewables moved to end services, with the manufacturer claiming $300 million is owed while Vineyard Wind alleges about $545 million in damages for a catastrophic blade collapse in July 2024.
- Judge Krupp ruled it would be "fanciful" to assume a new contractor could manage the proprietary turbine technology after the project recently completed installation of all 62 wind turbines at the Vineyard Wind Farm.
- Vineyard Wind spokesperson Craig Gilvarg said the decision ensures continued energy delivery to Massachusetts customers and the New England grid as the farm nears full operations powering about 400,000 homes.
- This development follows friction with President Donald Trump administration, which previously halted major East Coast offshore wind projects citing national security; the site lies 15 miles south of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket.
