Detroit Police Chief Plans to "Terminate" Two Officers Who Contacted Border Patrol Amid Traffic Stops
Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison will fire two officers for violating department policy by contacting Border Patrol during traffic stops, leading to federal detentions.
- At a Board of Police Commissioners meeting on Thursday, Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison said he plans to fire two unnamed Detroit police employees who contacted U.S. Customs and Border Protection, suspending them with pay while seeking suspensions without pay as the investigation continues.
- The incidents trace to stops on Dec. 16 and Feb. 9 when officers contacted Border Patrol after suspecting noncitizenship or due to a language barrier, violating Detroit Police Department policy, Bettison said.
- A routine body-camera audit uncovered the Dec. 16 stop on Detroit's west side where Border Patrol arrived, investigated, and detained the individual, Bettison said, noting, `Ultimately, this police officer, believing this individual was not a U.S. citizen, decided to contact Border Patrol,` Bettison said.
- At the council session Tuesday, Santiago-Romero requested a DPD update and sent a Jan. 8 memo to `ban or limit` ICE activity, while Roach said, `With that said and as previously stated, this administration will reenforce the longstanding policy that the Detroit Police Department does not, in any way, engage in federal immigration enforcement.`
- Amid calls for transparency, District 7 Councilman Denzel McCampbell said `That brings up a higher need for people to know what the policies are`, emphasizing the importance of clarifying department practices regarding immigration.
