Despite emergency appeal to Supreme Court, Bruce the dog euthanized in California
The dog’s euthanasia came after four judges upheld or declined to overturn the county’s order, according to Ventura County Animal Services.
On Wednesday, Ventura County Animal Services euthanized Bruce, a 3-year-old, 100-pound Great Pyrenees mix, after the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals denied the Santa Paula Animal Rescue Center's emergency motion to halt the procedure.
Ventura County Animal Services determined the dog was vicious in March based on four separate, unprovoked biting incidents dating back to February 2024, prompting the agency to recommend euthanasia to protect public safety.
Beatriz Ziegenfus reported a forearm bite requiring surgery and a skin graft at Ventura County Medical Center; Larry Graves reported multiple bites outside an Oxnard CVS store in September 2025.
Legal avenues closed after four judges upheld the euthanasia order across multiple court levels. The Santa Paula Animal Rescue Center mourned Bruce on Facebook, stating he was never just a legal dispute.
Ventura County Animal Services stated it respected the judicial process throughout, noting that multiple judges declined to interfere with the decision. Attorney Dan Bolton pledged further legal steps to seek accountability from the agency.
