Despite BTS Boycott, Grammy’s New Asian Pop Category To Debut Unchanged
The Recording Academy says the new Asian pop category will proceed after receiving robust submissions and support from music creators, despite objections from BTS and others.
On Thursday, October 1, Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. confirmed the new Best Asian Pop Music Performance category will proceed for the 2027 Grammy Awards despite controversy.
K-Pop superstars BTS and Stray Kids boycotted the ceremony, citing concerns the category segregates artists by region or language rather than recognizing global impact.
Following weeks of listening sessions, The Academy reported receiving a "robust" number of submissions and cited "broad-based support for the category" from fellow music creators.
Officials clarified that artists can still compete in General Field categories like Album of the Year, though eligible recordings must feature "meaningful use of one or more Asian languages."
Nominees for the 69th annual Grammy Awards are scheduled to be announced November 16, with the ceremony set for February 7, 2027.
