DeSantis: ‘Appropriate’ to pursue redistricting in Florida
FLORIDA, JUL 24 – DeSantis may pursue mid-decade redistricting to address alleged racial gerrymandering in North Florida, following a court ruling that upheld a 2022 map favoring Republicans.
- On July 17, the Florida Supreme Court upheld its congressional map, giving Republicans control of a North Florida district previously held by a Democrat.
- Focusing on North Florida's 5th District, the court noted its design spanned Jacksonville to west of Tallahassee using a nearly 200-mile-long land bridge that violated the Equal Protection Clause.
- Speaking Thursday, Governor Ron DeSantis said `there may be more defects that need to be remedied` during an appearance at the Manatee Performing Arts Center in Bradenton.
- House Minority Leader Fentrice Driskell called the plan a `dangerous abuse of power` and warned mid-decade redistricting would trigger all new rounds of expensive litigation.
