Des Moines School Board approves 2-year contract for interim Superintendent Matt Smith

- On Thursday, Oct. 9 the Des Moines School Board approved a two-year contract for Matt Smith as interim superintendent through the 2026-27 school year.
- Following the Sept. 26 detention of Ian Roberts, former superintendent Ian Roberts was held by Immigration and Customs Enforcement after officials revealed he was not a U.S. citizen and had worked without authorization since at least 2020.
- Matt Smith, a long-time DMPS leader, has worked at DMPS since 2010, served as North High School principal, became associate superintendent in 2018, and was interim superintendent in 2022-23 while leading the Reimagining Education initiative.
- The contract specifies compensation, including a $286,716 salary, $57,345 tax-sheltered annuity, $600 monthly reimbursement, and support costs for an executive coach, with post-contract senior administrator options.
- Board Chair Jackie Norris said Matt Smith brings stability, energy and enthusiasm to DMPS, and the contract includes a district-owned cell phone plus a possible salary increase in year two.
