Wes Streeting Backs Andy Burnham for Makerfield by-Election
Powell said Burnham would have broad Labour support after Josh Simons offered to step aside, while Starmer is not expected to block the move.
On Friday, Labour Deputy Leader Lucy Powell endorsed Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham's bid to contest the Makerfield by-election after incumbent MP Josh Simons announced he would resign to facilitate the mayoral run.
Burnham must secure permission from Labour's National Executive Committee next week to stand, following a previous unsuccessful attempt to contest a Gorton and Denton by-election blocked by party officials earlier this year.
Wes Streeting, the former health secretary, backed Burnham as Labour's "best chance" to defeat Reform UK, which secured nearly half the vote in this month's local elections across the constituency.
While allies suggest Burnham could challenge Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer for leadership if successful, Communities Secretary Steve Reed warned that internal contests risk repeating the political chaos that plagued the Conservatives.
A Makerfield by-election could cost taxpayers up to £226,000, and the contest serves as a critical test for Labour's resilience against the surging Reform party amid ongoing party leadership speculation.
