Depression May Shut Down the Brain’s Ability to Make New Neurons

Researchers found nearly 500,000 hippocampal cells from 30 donors showed stalled neurogenesis in major depressive disorder and revealed druggable molecular pathways.

One study shows for the first time that neurogenesis or the formation of new neurons is stagnating in the brains of adults with major depressive disorder: the creation of these brain cells in the adult hippocampus is crucial, as most of the 100 billion brain neurons are created before birth. This would explain the reduction of the ability to adapt to a changing environment in people with this type of depression.
