US has deported 25,000 people to third countries under secretive deals: Report
- Since January 2025, the Trump administration has secretly deported more than 25,400 people to 35 countries under opaque agreements, according to an investigation by Forbidden Stories network published Monday.
- The State Department's Office of Remigration, led by diplomat Christian Jove Ehrhardt, managed the covert negotiations. Washington used visa bans and restrictions to strongarm countries into accepting deportees.
- Internal State Department records showed the administration earmarked $410 million for agreements, with $81 million for signatory governments and the remainder allocated to organizations including $123 million for UNHCR.
- Many deportees were sent to nations where they have no ties. Lawyers told the AFP that these individuals are thrown into a "legal black hole", held without charge or rights.
- In Eswatini, a deal to accept 160 migrants sparked unprecedented protests, highlighting humanitarian concerns. The UNHCR defended its involvement, stating funding was used to strengthen asylum systems.
