- Earlier this year, repatriation flights under the previous government, which lost on February 23, 2025, began large-scale returns by Pakistan and Iran.
- The United Nations assistance mission in Afghanistan and OHCHR documented torture, ill-treatment, arbitrary detention and threats, targeting women and girls, former officials, media workers and activists.
- In response, Volker Türk warned `Nobody should be sent back to a country where they face the risk of persecution on account of their identity or personal history`, while the UN condemned the abuses and urged compliance with international law.
- To improve protection, member states should extend resettlement possibilities, prioritizing protection for at-risk Afghans, the report said.
