Democratic-aligned Colorado group launches effort to redistrict after 2026
The measure aims to temporarily suspend Colorado's independent redistricting commission to favor Democrats in 7 of 8 districts for 2028 and 2030, requiring voter approval.
- On Wednesday, Coloradans for a Level Playing Field unveiled a proposal to place an initiative on the ballot this year asking Colorado voters to temporarily override the Independent Congressional Redistricting Commission for new maps in the 2028 and 2030 elections.
- Coloradans for a Level Playing Field, which formed earlier this month and registered Feb. 4, says it is responding to Republican-led states redrawing maps over the last year.
- The proposed map would shift the 8th District into Denver and western Adams County, tied to Democratic interests, with Rachel Gordon and Hilltop Public Solutions involved.
- It requires gathering about 125,000 signatures with at least 2% from each district, costing upward of $2,000,000 using paid signature gatherers, and donors won’t be reported until May.
- The proposal positions Colorado in the national gerrymandering fight, favoring Democrats in seven of eight seats for the 2028 and 2030 elections and leaving one Republican-leaning district held by U.S. Representative Lauren Boebert.
