Study Based on Satellite Assessment Finds Widespread PM2.5 Pollution Across India
Delhi's annual PM2.5 average was 101 µg/m³, 2.5 times above India's standard, with 447 districts nationwide surpassing air quality limits, CREA reported.
- On Nov 25, a satellite-based analysis found Delhi recorded an annual mean PM2.5 of 11 micrograms per cubic metre, with over 447 districts breaching the NAAQS.
- The CREA study, covering March 2024–February 2025, examined annual PM2.5 concentrations using satellite-based analysis and recommended improved satellite monitoring to track pollution sources.
- Regional data show Chandigarh recorded 70 micrograms per cubic metre, Haryana 63 and Tripura 62, while Assam, Bihar, West Bengal, Punjab, Meghalaya and Nagaland also exceeded the national standard.
- Experts warned long-term PM2.5 exposure raises risks of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, strokes, and premature death, and the report calls for coordinated central and state governments’ efforts with accelerated policy implementation, strengthened monitoring, and stricter emission controls.
- Data also reveal the most polluted districts are concentrated in a few states, with Delhi and Assam each accounting for 11 of the top 50, while Ladakh, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Lakshadweep were excluded due to insufficient monitoring.
