Two Days Before October 10 Jantar Mantar Protest, Delhi Police Crime Branch Registers Fresh FIR to Probe July 20 Violence
The probe will examine whether the violence was preplanned and whether criminal elements joined the march, police said.
- The Delhi Police Crime Branch registered a new FIR on Thursday to investigate violence during the July 20 Cockroach Janta Party protest, following Supreme Court directions that cancelled 17 previous cases.
- This fresh investigation follows the Supreme Court's September 1 order quashing earlier FIRs, though the court allowed police to specifically probe individuals with criminal backgrounds present at the 'Chalo Sansad' march.
- Investigators are scrutinizing 2,873 suspects identified by the Facial Recognition System during the march, including 989 accused in heinous cases, 101 named in murder cases, and at least 42 involved in multiple murders.
- Ahead of an October 10 protest dubbed 'Jantar Mantar 2.0' by the Cockroach Janta Party, police are tracking identified individuals, noting permission for the demonstration has not been granted.
- To prevent disruptions, officials are working to ensure these 2,800-odd individuals with criminal antecedents do not reach Delhi for the protest seeking the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
