Delhi braces for more protests as 'cockroach' group's leaders released
Police detained the leaders after their aircraft landed as protesters pressed for the election chief’s resignation over a voter-roll revision affecting more than 130 million names.
- On Sunday, an Executive Magistrate court released Cockroach Janta Party founder Abhijeet Dipke, Saurav Das, and Ashutosh Ranka from detention following their Saturday arrest at Jantar Mantar protests demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
- Authorities removed more than 130 million voters from the list since last year, triggering the protests. Critics describe the move as politically motivated, while the Bharatiya Janata Party and Election Commission deny allegations of manipulation.
- Delhi witnessed mass detentions Saturday, with authorities detaining around 1,000 protesters. Delhi Police released a video claiming they informed Dipke of his grandmother's death, though he "declined" the offer for assistance to attend the funeral.
- Despite release conditions requiring "no breach of peace for one year," Dipke stated, "We will hit the streets again." He further criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling him "an embarrassment to India."
- The CJP movement began as an online satirical campaign this summer after India's chief justice compared unemployed youth to parasites. The group previously forced the resignation of the education minister in July, marking a rare setback for the prime minister.
