Defence Minister McGuinty Announces $3.7B Plan for 6,000 New Military Homes
- On Feb. 24, 2026, Defence Minister David McGuinty announced a $3.7-billion plan to build 6,000 military housing units across 25 communities where the Canadian Armed Forces operates.
- The auditor-general's report found that as of March 2025, 66 per cent of CAF members waiting for housing were single, but only 22 per cent of units were suitable, and the department needed 5,200 to 7,200 units.
- Defence Construction Canada issued an advance procurement notice valued at about $3.74-billion to inform builders, while the Canadian Forces Housing Agency will partner with Build Canada Homes using Modern Methods of Construction and build on over 800 units already underway.
- The government argues the measure supports recruitment and modernization, with McGuinty saying it will help Armed Forces recruitment, which he told reporters was up by 13 per cent over the last eight months.
- Both phases aim to build approximately 7,500 units, linking to the Feb. 17 Defence Industrial Strategy released Feb. 17.
