Five-Foot Snake Blamed for Widespread Power Outage in Alabama
Crews rerouted power through alternate feeds while repairs continued after the snake bridged energized equipment at the substation, officials said.
On Thursday, a 5-foot snake caused a widespread power outage in Decatur, Alabama, affecting more than one-third of Decatur Utilities customers after entering the Cedar Lake Primary substation.
The snake was "just long enough" to bridge two pieces of energized equipment inside the Cedar Lake Primary substation, according to Decatur Utilities, which did not identify the species.
Crews rerouted electricity through alternate feeds to distribution substations thanks to the radial design of the power grid, restoring service while repairs continued at Cedar Lake Primary.
Decatur Utilities did not immediately say when the outage occurred or provide the exact number of customers affected by the disruption.
Nicknamed "The River City," Decatur is located on the banks of Wheeler Lake along the Tennessee River, with heat advisories in effect for the next two days.
