5 dead in Colorado highway crashes after blowing dirt makes it hard to see

Heavy winds caused brownout conditions leading to a crash involving 36 vehicles and 29 injuries, with five fatalities confirmed, officials said.

  • On Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2026, a multi-vehicle pileup on Interstate 25 near Pueblo just after 10 a.m. involved 36 vehicles, killing five and injuring 29, Colorado State Patrol said.
  • Dangerous `brown out` conditions from blowing dirt and wind created near-zero visibility that investigators said contributed to the crash, while gusts reached up to around 70 mph, the National Weather Service reported.
  • More than 50 responders from 23 agencies attended the scene, where one pickup hauling a livestock trailer with 30 sheep and one goat was involved, and video obtained by local outlets showed a sheep running amid the chaos.
  • All northbound lanes of I-25 reopened around 11:39 p.m., and UCHealth Parkview treated 19 patients while Pueblo School District 60 provided buses, Cafasso said, `We were ready and waiting for them`.
  • The CSP Crash Reconstruction Team will lead the investigation while CDOT and the NWS warn of rapid visibility declines and possible closures through Thursday.
