Bangladesh Air Force Jet Crashes Into School in Dhaka, Killing at Least 27 People
DHAKA, BANGLADESH, JUL 22 – The pilot attempted to divert the malfunctioning jet away from populated areas but it crashed into a school, killing 27 including 25 children and injuring over 170, officials said.
- On Monday afternoon at 1:06 p.m., a Bangladesh Air Force F-7 BGI training jet crashed into a Milestone School and College building in Dhaka's Uttara neighbourhood, killing 27 and injuring over 170.
- According to a military statement, the Chinese-made F-7 BGI training aircraft experienced a technical malfunction moments after takeoff from A.K. Khandaker air force base.
- On Tuesday, officials reported 171 people rescued, 78 hospitalized, and Maherin Chowdhury died rescuing over 20 students, Tanzina Tanu said.
- Tuesday’s HSC exams were postponed, and the Bangladesh government declared Tuesday a day of national mourning in response to the crash.
- With national grief still fresh, Muhammad Yunus said 'necessary measures' would be taken to investigate the cause and 'ensure all kinds of assistance', while aviation experts warned of risks from aging Chinese-made jets.
