- The outbreak began in New Town on September 3, 2026, primarily affecting males aged 16 to 55, who represent 95 per cent of cases, with a provisional case-fatality ratio of approximately 48.3 percent.
- Commissioner Ajaka noted victims experienced headache, weakness, and visual disturbances; eight deaths occurred after consumption at an Araromi-Obu naming ceremony, with some patients deteriorating rapidly.
- State authorities temporarily banned locally brewed herbal beverages and arrested several suspects, while the State Rapid Response Team investigates with the World Health Organisation and NAFDAC.
- While 36 blood and urine samples await toxicological analysis, the government urges residents to avoid unverified substances and seek immediate care at the General Hospital in Ore or UNIMED Teaching Hospital if symptoms develop.
