‘My Heart Is Heavy’: High School Student Killed in Bus Stop Shooting, Authorities Say
Authorities say the 17-year-old was shot after a short altercation and died at the scene as investigators search for the shooter.
On Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2026, 17-year-old Jomiltron Sentell Fair Jr. was fatally shot at a bus stop on West Rutledge Avenue in Gaffney, South Carolina, near Granard Court apartments.
Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler reported Fair walked from his apartment at 6:49 a.m. to board the bus when a male suspect approached him, leading to a brief altercation.
Surveillance video from the school bus shows the shooter fleeing to a waiting vehicle driven by another person, according to Fowler. Fifteen children witnessed the incident from inside the bus.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division's Special Victims Unit was requested to assist the Gaffney Police Department with the investigation. No arrests have been announced as of Wednesday.
Gaffney Mayor Dr. Lyman Dawkins III urged the community to "keep working together, loving one another" in fighting violence, while the Cherokee County School District maintained operations with enhanced safety measures.
